From Nature To Bench: Materials and Process

Every piece we sell starts as raw metal and rough material on our workbench. We don’t do mass production, assembly lines, or cheap factory casting. We build everything ourselves from scratch. Currently our "workbench" just so happens to be a repurposed vanity, but we dont mind!

The Sourcing (And Our Upcoming Move)

We buy raw 925 sterling silver and do all the heavy lifting ourselves. We shape the ring shanks, build custom bezels to fit each individual piece, and do all our own soldering and polishing.

We have a strict rule: no synthetic, lab-grown, or artificially dyed gems. If a stone is in our shop, it is 100% real. Because many natural gems are inherently porous, we explicitly source stones that have been professionally sealed. This locks in their natural color and guards them against everyday wear, but the stone underneath is exactly as the earth made it.

We stick to sterling silver, but when a design needs a gold look, we only use high-quality gold-filled or gold over stainless steel. We choose these specifically so your jewelry won't turn your skin green or tarnish after a few wears.

Right now, the shells in our ocean pieces are treasures we found ourselves walking the Gulf Coast beaches. We are moving our lives and studio to Tennessee soon, but we aren't letting the ocean line die. Once we move, we will be partnering with locals back on the coast to source authentic, hand-gathered Gulf shells for us. However, our personal stash is limited—once the shells we personally combed from the sand are gone, they're gone!

Our Story

               Mermaid Money came to life in the spring of 2026 after a memorable trip to Nokomis Beach, Florida. As Ashley and Cameron stepped onto the shoreline, they were left speechless by the sight before them—a blanket of shells stretching as far as the eye could see. Although Cameron was born and raised in Florida, he had never witnessed so many shells washed ashore, and Ashley, who grew up in East Tennessee, was completely captivated by the beauty of the coast.
              That day sparked an idea that would become much more than a hobby. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the ocean, Ashley was inspired to create jewelry that reflected the places and moments that make nature so unforgettable. Having always loved artisan jewelry, she began teaching herself the craft, spending countless hours learning new techniques and refining her skills. With patience and dedication, what started as curiosity soon grew into a true passion for creating handcrafted jewelry.
              Ashley and Cameron first met in the summer of 2020, and it was love at first sight. At the time, Cameron was serving in the United States Marine Corps as a Drill Instructor while Ashley was attending the University of South Carolina Beaufort, pursuing a degree in Biology. After several years together, Cameron knew Ashley was the person he wanted to spend his life with. Recognizing the challenges of military life for a growing family, he made the decision to leave the Marine Corps and pursue new opportunities.
               Ashley had planned to continue her education at LECOM in pursuit of a career in dentistry, but over time she realized her passion for creating was leading her in a different direction. Together, they built Mermaid Money as a way to combine Ashley's artistic vision with Cameron's entrepreneurial spirit.
             Today, Mermaid Money creates handcrafted jewelry inspired by the ocean, the coast, and the beauty of the natural world. While our roots began with shells gathered along Florida's shores, our inspiration extends far beyond the beach. Every collection is thoughtfully designed in small batches using quality materials and carefully selected natural elements, creating timeless pieces that celebrate adventure, nature, and everyday beauty.
           Our hope is that every piece you wear reminds you of your favorite places, inspires new adventures, and helps you carry a little piece of nature with you wherever life takes you.
